Activities

The Gelato Federation is an international Itanium Linux user community dedicated to creating and sharing open-source solutions for real-world high-performance technical computing (HPTC) problems. Gelato is advancing the adoption of Linux on Itanium by developing and assembling the necessary open-source tools, utilities, libraries, and applications for academic, government, and industrial research. In addition, the Federation offers a cache of knowledge to people with an interest in Linux Itanium – including recent adopters, long-time users, and those looking to use Linux Itanium – by attending conferences, organizing regular meetings, and maintaining a highly informative and interactive portal.

Central Operations Projects

Gelato Central Operations collaborates on projects with sponsors, members, and the Linux-Itanium community to enrich the Linux-Itanium platform. Click here for more details about Central Operations.

  • Gelato Vanilla
The Gelato Vanilla project exists to make available highly-optimized binaries for critical Linux utilities on the Linux Itanium platform and to give developers tips to create efficient binaries. The Vanilla project is partially funded by the Intel Compiler Lab.

  • Gelato Coconut
The objective of the Gelato Coconut project is to provide Gelato users with the possibility to submit jobs to remote computing facilities.

  • Gelato GCC on Itanium Workgroup
The aim of this workgroup is bring together those with an interest in compilers, those with an interest in Itanium, and those with a particular interest in GCC, in order to produce the best GCC for Itanium possible.

Member Projects

As an organization representing the research computing communities in government, industry, and academy, Gelato's primary objective is to be responsive to community needs and interests. By working together to meet real-world problems and application needs, we strive to achieve a balance between long-term and short-term goals with attention to both cutting-edge research and the long-term perspective. Gelato is committed to providing the research community with open-source solutions for the Linux Itanium platform.

With members from almost every continent on the globe, the work of the Federation centers around seven main focus areas: compilers, parallel filesystems, performance, scalability, cluster and grid computing, Linux Itanium Standards, Linux Itanium tool integration. Within these areas, Gelato Members are applying new technology and solutions to specific applications in bioinformatics, high-energy physics, and atmospheric sciences just to name a few. Below is a list of our members' current projects.

Building Community

The Gelato Federation is actively building a Linux Itanium community, both internally – through supporting member projects, encouraging collaborations, and pairing members with appropriate sponsors – and externally by sharing knowledge about Linux on Itanium. Gelato gathers and disseminates information by attending numerous HPTC conferences and by fostering a vibrant community through its portal.

Events
The Gelato Federation is an active participant in the HPTC community. Throughout the year, Gelato exhibits at various conferences to educate the public about the Gelato initiative, our members' projects and their real-world computing solutions, and Linux Itanium in general. Read about some of the events we have attended.

The Portal
Gelato.org is the place to go to for information on Linux on Itanium. Our portal development team strives to maintain up-to-date data about Linux on Itanium events, developments, projects and software releases. The portal offers a vibrant and open user community where both general visitors and Gelato Members can interact, share information, and notify each other of their project's progress. We invite participation from all interested persons and organizations.
